2 Principles Of Productivity

2 Principles Of Productivity

Parkinson’s law

Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.

This means that we are more productive when we are under pressure to deliver to short deadlines with limited time available. If we have excess time for a task we will find a way to fill that time, whether we need it or not.

Give yourself short deadlines and work in bursts to meet those activities. e,g, rather than give yourself a 2 week deadline to complete 10 tasks give yourself a 10 minute deadline and focus on 1 task.

Pareto principle

80% of the results come from 20% of the work

Look at your numbers and find the top performing 20% in any area and focus on that.e.g. If only 2 out of 10 customers bring in the most revenue. Divert more attention to them, divert more of your time to get more customers just like them and over time service the remaining customers less and less (or even fire them). This can be applied in any area; work hours, staff, your product portfolio. Now it’s not strictly 80/20 it could be 90/10 or 70/30, I hope you get the idea.

Take a moment and think about how they could apply to you. Are there any other principles you find useful?
